January Class newsletter
Who's Mrs. H?It is possible you will be hearing a new name around the house: Mrs. Hirsch or Mrs. H. There has been no change in your student's teacher, however, as many of you know, I was married over the winter break! I have also taken my husband's last name, therefore Miss Schiff is now Mrs. Hirsch. I know it will take a while for students, teachers and parents to get used to the different name (It's still new to me!), but I thank you for trying!
What's Happening in the classroom:Welcome back from Winter break! This month students will be continuing their learning in all subjects.
In Reading students will be finishing our unit on "Rules to Live By" as they write their own evidence-based essays about a rule they choose to live by concerning issues of healthy habits, recycling, or bullying facing their age group. Students will then begin a new module and a new novel, Dragonwings. by Laurence Yep. In this module, students will move from a focus of theme to a focus on point of view and the techniques authors use to develop their own perspectives in their writing, as well as the point of view of their protagonist. Students have also completed Unit 2 on the division of fractions by fractions. As we move into Unit 3, students will be focusing on integers, absolute values, inequalities, and the relationship of opposite integers and their absolute values on the coordinate plane. Students will be learning these concepts through the real-world situations of temperature, elevation, and banking. In Social Studies, our next unit will be on India. Students will be placed in expert groups, each of which focuses their learning on a specific topic in relation to ancient Indian society. With their knowledge, each group will be teaching the class about either the Indus river, ancient civilization, or the history and development of Hinduism and Buddhism. This month students will also begin a research assignment on the respiratory, digestive, circulatory, and skeletal systems of animals, as well the systems in plants. Students will have the opportunity to share their understanding of the significance of each of these systems and how they work together as a whole as they progress into next month. |

A representative from KAF will give a presentation to classes about the bread baking process and will enlist the help of students to do so. Afterwards, students will be given a kit of bread baking supplies so they can bake their own loaves of bread at home. Students will have enough supplies to bake two laves of bread. One loaf they can keep at home for the family to enjoy, while the second loaf will be donated to an organization of the class' choosing. Stay tuned for pictures of the event as well as information concerning the charity organization chosen by the class and our donation day. Parents are asked to help in this project by driving students to the drop off location on the donation day.
Class wish list:A new year, and classroom supplies are needed! Below is a list of items that we are running low on. Thank you in advance to any and all who help us restock!
- Tissues - Paper towels - - Hand sanitizer - college ruled lined paper - Soap - Expo Markers (colored) Homework Reminder:As a reminder, your student's agenda should be signed every evening. This is one way to check that you are aware they completed their homework, and what the homework was. Students who have missing assignments still need to complete the assignment. All missing and late assignments are a zero.
Additionally, Passports go home in Tuesday folders every week and progress reports go home every other week. This semester the first progress report will be sent on January 21. Please be sure you look for these as they need to be signed and are a means of communicating your student's progress. |
**Progress reports**
A quick note about progress reports:
Progress reports will be sent home this week on Wednesday, September 4th. Please sign your student's progress report and have them return it to class so I am aware that you have seen it. This will count as an assignment for your student as well. No signature will be marked as a negative in their passport (students received a new passport for the month of September). Please note that an assignment labeled as "missing" is currently still missing. It is possible your student turned it in without a name and it was never claimed. As per the Homework agreement, missing assignments cannot be made up if they were not due to an excused absence. An assignment labeled as "late" was either missing at one point and turned in late, and/or was an assignment without a name, that the student later claimed. Please recall that all late assignments are given a lesser grade.
Progress reports will continue to be sent out every other week in the Tuesday folders. Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. You can also access your student's progress on CLI from your home computer at any time.
